People's Welfare
Syeda Abida Hussain had a deep passion for the development of her constituency area and to empower the women. Poor quality of life and infrastructure in Jhang has been a target for improvement throughout her political career. Her fight against poverty and backwardness goes back as 1967 when young politician, Abida Hussain endowed an income generating project for rural women at Shah Jewna in district Jhang of Punjab, Pakistan. The project initially involved 200 women who have earned millions of rupees through a humble start. This ambitious project, first of its kind in that area remains operational there as the Shah Jewna Weavers and Embroiders Co-operative.
She also sponsored an ambitious project of health for the welfare of women, in association with her illustrious mother, Begum Kishwar Abid Hussain. This is the Syed Abid Hussain Memorial Trust Hospital for woman and children, at Jhang. The 50 bedded health care facility, is only one of its kind in this category in Pakistan, a privately endowed hospital by women, for women.
She has been a strong proponent of quality education in the country. In 1980 she sponsored the Abid Hussain Foundation School at Jhang. Although a small endeavor in that area it is second to none in providing quality education to more than 300 students of low income group.
Syeda Abida Hussain, alongwith her mother Begum Kishwar Abid Hussain, started the project of Lahore Grammar School, in 1983 in association with six other enlightened women. This venture has earned laurels from whole of the country in quality education and now its branches are all over Pakistan. LGS has become a symbol of prestige and honor in the field of private education in Pakistan. It has achieved excellence which is unsurpassed. In fact it is the best example of imagination, honesty, dedication and sincerity of purpose.
The creation of Crafts Council of Pakistan in 1981 by Syeda Abida Hussain is another endeavor towards the development and for the uplift of the people of backward areas of Pakistan. In co-ordination with Lok Virsa Institute at Islamabad, Syeda Abida Hussain was one of the early sponsors of the Lok Mela, and remained associated with the World Crafts Council and Asian Crafts Council for two decades.
